In Shelby County there is deeply rich history that makes our county very special. Did you know that Shelby County actually predates the State of Alabama? That’s right, Alabama became a state in December 1819, almost two years after Shelby County was founded in February of 1818. Many of Shelby County’s original structures and homes still exist as a testament to an age and industries long gone. The oldest building in Shelby County still stands from 1823, the King’s House on the University of Montevallo’s campus. Remnants of the coal industry still exist largely at the Shelby Iron Works Park and in Montevallo and Helena. The American Village is a celebration and testament to American History, with almost 20 historically iunsp0ried structures that instruct students and visitors alike on the importance of American unity. When you visit, take the time to stop and savor these historical places as you immerse yourself in the history of America and the future you will go forth and be part of.
