Alabama Wildlife Center

The Alabama Wildlife Center was founded in 1977 and is Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation organization. Alabama Wildlife Center treats approximately 1,800 native wild birds from more than 100 different species annually. The Center’s dual mission is to provide medical and rehabilitative care for Alabama’s injured and orphaned native wildlife in order to permit their return to the wild, and to educate people in order to heighten awareness and appreciation of Alabama’s native wildlife. At the center you can interact with a variety of bird species up close and personal or walk the Treetop Nature Trail Boardwalk and visit six birds in their enclosures.
Aldrich Coal Mine Museum

The Aldrich Coal Mine Museum features coal mining memorabilia, a mine replica and vintage equipment photographs of the town of Aldrich at its coal-mining peak. Located in the Company store of the former Montevallo Coal Mine displays pictures and artifacts of community of Aldrich, coal mine, prison, stores, churches and post office. The Collection teaches history of coal mining in Alabama and has the only coal miner monument in Alabama.

Lee Springs Park

Lee Springs Park is one of Helena’s hidden gems—a quiet, shaded spot that’s perfect for a peaceful walk or a relaxed afternoon outdoors. Tucked into a wooded area not far from town, the park offers a calm escape with walking paths, open green space, and the gentle sound of the nearby spring. It’s not a big park, but that’s part of its charm. Locals stop by to take a breather, enjoy a bit of nature, or just sit and listen to the water. If you’re looking for a low-key place to unwind, Lee Springs Park is well worth a visit. History buffs will love this park for the remains of once-used coke ovens from Alabama's mining past.
Morgan Creek Vineyards and Winery

Morgan Creek Vineyards and Winery has been around for a while now. In 2001, they produced around 600 cases of wine, but by 2007 they were making 15,000 cases, which they sold in 400 stores all over Alabama, including big grocery chains and wine shops. They’ve definitely found a unique niche in the wine market. They specialize in muscadine and fruit wines that are semi-sweet to sweetish. You won’t find a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir here. Instead, you will find something that is really local to the area. Morgan Creek is also a beautiful venue to host a special event or wedding. The lush grounds and serene landscape are the perfect backdrop for life's treasured moments.

Oak Mountain Interpretive Center

Oak Mountain Interpretive Center The Oak Mountain Interpretive Center is a center for environmental education, ecological research and family recreation. The Interpretive Center is located in Oak Mountain State Park, the largest park in the state of Alabama. The Center is the product of a collaboration between Samford University, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Shelby County, Alabama; the Alabama Wildlife Center and the Friends of Oak Mountain. Mission The mission of of the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center is to promote appreciation for Oak Mountain State Park as a natural habitat and to provide a hands-on interactive educational experience that enables children and adults to learn about Alabama’s biodiversity, students and teachers to research its wonders, and all visitors to understand the importance of environmental stewardship.
Old Baker Farm

Old Baker Farm is a living piece of Alabama history — a family-run farm that's been going strong for over 200 years. Homesteaded before the Civil War and worked by the Baker family for more than a century, the farm has seen six generations and still thrives today, growing everything from cotton and corn to pumpkins and Christmas trees. Each October, the Bakers open their gates for the beloved Cotton Pickin’ Celebration, where visitors can experience life on a real working farm. Old Quill Cemetery

This cemetery was established June 2, 1849 by veteran of the War of 1812, Loftin Quinn. “In Consideration of His Love for the Church He Conveyed the Burying Ground to the Trustees of Liberty Church And Their Successors. The Cemetery is listed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register. The historic sign was erected by the friends of Old Quinn Burying Ground in 2004. To find the Old Quinn Cemetery located on Whisenhunt Road, look for the historical marker at the intersection of Whisenhunt Road and Highway 47 in Chelsea.

Ozan Winery started in 2001 as a boutique winery and has now grown to include multiple vineyards, a tasting room, a distillery, and a cafe. Akridge Arboretum Park

The Akridge Arboretum Park is a one acre park that was established in 1993 and developed around the Historic Presbyterian Church which is now used for weddings and reunions. The Akridge Arboretum Park was dedicated and named after the late Willie Akridge for his dedication and service as Principal for Calera High School. The Akridge Arboretum Society has recently worked with Landscape Architects at Southern Living to develop a master plan for the renovation of the park.

Alabaster Municipal Park

Located between Thompson Middle School and Thompson Intermediate School, Alabaster Municipal Park is a premier venue for sports events, family gatherings, and community activities. This expansive park offers a wide range of amenities, making it the ideal location for events of all kinds in Shelby County. The park features 4 lighted tennis courts, perfect for tournaments and casual play, and 3 lighted basketball courts (1 full court and 2 half courts) to accommodate both recreational and competitive games. 12 lighted soccer fields are available, including specialized fields for different age groups, from U6 to U13+, as well as a lighted practice field for training and warm-ups. For event organizers, the park provides two rentable pavilions—one with 6 picnic tables and another with 9 picnic tables—ideal for hosting outdoor events, family reunions, or team picnics. Additionally, 10 free-standing picnic tables are available under shade trees on a first-come, first-serve basis at no charge. The park also features a playground, restrooms with water fountains, and ample parking, ensuring a comfortable experience for all visitors. While the park is pet-friendly for visitors outside athletic facilities, please note that dogs are not allowed past the entrance gates of any athletic areas. Whether you're planning a sports tournament, community festival, or casual event, Alabaster Municipal Park offers everything you need for a successful event in a beautiful, accessible setting.
Beeswax Creek Park

Beeswax Creek Park is the premier boat launch site for Lay Lake. Bordered by Beeswax Creek to its north and Lay Lake (Coosa River) to its east, the park is located off State Highway 145 in the Columbiana / Wilsonville area. Located on property leased from Alabama Power Company, the day-use-only park, adjacent to Beeswax Landing, was built and is maintained by Shelby County. Beeswax Creek Park has many amenities including three fishing piers; one handicap-accessible fishing pier; two picnic pavilions; two canoe-in-only campsites; a 2.8-mile multi-use trail for hiking, running, and mountain biking; two playgrounds; a basketball court; and two restroom facilities. A caretaker provides security for the park. Alabama Power Company, through its "The Preserves" program, has added a boardwalk and a bridge to the trail system created a pollinator plot with interpretive signs and built two gazebos overlooking Lay Lake. Beeswax Landing features a four-lane public boat launch, an ADA-accessible fish weigh-in pavilion with live wells and water access, sidewalks, and parking for 155 truck/trailers. It is an annual host site for the Alabama Bass Trail Series. The site has hosted numerous local, regional, and national fishing tournaments including the 2017 Carhartt College B.A.S.S. Series Wild Card Tournament, BASS High School Southern Open, and hosted the 40th Annual Bassmaster Classic, the fourth Classic on Lay Lake.
Buck Creek Park
Located along Buck Creek, Buck Creek Park in Alabaster offers a perfect setting for sports events, family gatherings, and outdoor activities. The park features 3 softball fields, a football field, and a quarter-mile walking track, along with a scenic Buck Creek Trail for walking and jogging. Event organizers can take advantage of the pavilion available for rent, picnic tables, and the charming gazebo for outdoor events. The park also offers restrooms, a water fountain, and ample parking. With accessible features like ADA accessibility and an exercise station, Buck Creek Park is a versatile and convenient venue for a variety of events in Alabaster.
Cahaba River WMA Shooting Range

The Cahaba River WMA Shooting Range offers shooting lanes at 25, 50, and 100 yards. A separate shotgun range for clay target shooting is situated to the east of the rifle range. All users are required to check in with the Range Officers before using any of the facilities.
Chelsea Recreational Park

Chelsea Recreational Park offers a variety of amenities for sports, outdoor activities, and family gatherings. The park features three softball fields, a practice football field, and an athletic field for team sports and casual play. Visitors can enjoy the playground, swing set, and spacious play meadow, making it a great spot for families. Dunnavant Valley Fields

Dunnavant Valley Fields has more than 50 acres on site including six soccer fields. The fields have played host to numerous youth soccer tournaments attracting some of the top soccer players from across the nation. In addition, the fields have hosted the U.S. Women’s National Team, along with teams from Brazil, England and Australia as a practice facility while competing at Birmingham’s Legion Field as part of the 1996 Olympics.
Eagle Sports Complex

Forest Park & Recreational Area

Spanning approximately 100 acres, Forest Park & Recreational Park offers a perfect blend of outdoor activities and natural beauty. The park features basketball courts, three soccer fields (maintained by the Chelsea Soccer Club), and a tot lot for young children. Visitors can enjoy the walking nature trail, swings, and well-maintained restrooms for convenience. Whether you're looking to play sports, explore nature, or relax outdoors, Forest Park & Recreational Park is an ideal spot for both active events and family fun.
Heardmont Park

Heardmont Park covers seventy-four acres which includes the Oak Mountain High School Football Stadium with rubberized track, 7 baseball fields, 2 softball fields, 3 soccer fields, playground facilities, walking trails, 4 lighted tennis courts, 2 pickleball courts, and a senior center. Cahaba Valley Creek meanders southwesterly through the park. While bridges are available to cross the creeks, low water crossings exist to let kids and kids at heart get their feet wet. History Shelby County and the Shelby County Board of Education purchased the property that is now Heardmont Park from the City of Hoover. The park was funded by a Foundation consisting of the County, the Shelby County Board of Education, area athletic boosters and concerned citizens. Shelby County coordinated construction of all permanent park amenities and structures; athletic fields coordinated and built by local athletic organizations, Oak Mountain Youth Baseball & Softball and American Soccer Club. Don't even think quantity over quality though, Runner's World Magazine named the running trails at Oak Mountain as one of "The Crown Jewels," listing them among the Top 25 Best Trail Runs in America. The park offers classic camp cabins, an amazing golf course, a pro shop with a delicious snack bar, tent and RV camping spots, picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, mountain bike trails, backpacking, and horseback riding and equestrian campground facilities. With the largest area and variety of outdoor recreational pursuits, Oak Mountain is sure to provide excitement for every member of the family! Oliver Park

Oliver Park in Calera is a growing sports and recreation hub offering over 120 acres of athletic and community facilities. The complex features football, baseball/softball fields, basketball courts, and is home to Calera High School’s Ricky M. Cairns Stadium. It also includes playgrounds, walking trails, and pavilions for gatherings. Recent expansions have added tennis courts, a track and field complex, new baseball/softball fields, and youth soccer and football facilities—making Oliver Park a premier destination for sports in Shelby County.
Pelham City Park

Spain Park Sports Complex

Spain Park Sports Complex, located next to Spain Park High School on Valleydale Road, is a well-equipped facility designed for both organized sports and casual recreation. The complex features two adult softball/baseball fields, a large picnic pavilion, a concession stand, and clean restroom facilities. There’s also a spacious playground on site—currently closed for construction, but set to reopen even better in the near future. Conveniently located just minutes from both I-65 and Highway 280, the complex is easy to find whether you’re coming for a game or just spending time outdoors. From I-65, take the Valleydale Road exit and continue about four miles—look for the entrance just past Spain Park High School and the lake. From Highway 280, turn onto Valleydale across from Home Depot and watch for the park entrance about two miles down the road.

In the winter of 1974, Hall Thompson and Harald Lassen Jr. sat along Dunnavant Road in Shelby County, Alabama, awaiting the arrival of Jack Nicklaus. The land before them was dense with woods, and Nicklaus, upon first glance, was skeptical. However, after further consideration, he realized the potential of the area. He proposed to Thompson that there was room for not just one, but two golf courses. Thompson, however, had a different vision: "We only want one golf course, but we want to make it a superior one." And so, Shoal Creek was born. Opening on November 1, 1977, the club hosted a ceremonial round featuring three U.S. Open champions: Nicklaus, Jerry Pate, and Hubert Green. Shelby County Airport

Located in the southern portion of Shelby County off of I-65 at Exit 234, the Shelby County Airport is a general aviation facility owned and operated by the Shelby County Commission. Only 30 minutes from downtown Birmingham and one hour from Montgomery and Tuscaloosa, the airport is close to three metropolitan areas. The terminal offers wi-fi services, pilot’s lounge, conference room and many other amenities. The County owns and leases multiple types of hangars that serve the approximately 160 aircraft that are based on the field. Hangar rentals are available, with a waiting list. The 75 foot wide asphalt runway is 5001 feet in length. The airport offers two flight schools and an airplane maintenance shop. Shelby County is continuously improving facilities at the airport from terminal renovations, new hangar construction projects and maintenance projects such as asphalt preservation and striping. These projects are funded with revenue generated from the airport operations as well as state and federal grant funds.
