Back in 1896, Thomas C. Thompson had this idea to set up a textile manufacturing plant on the banks of Buck Creek in what was known as Siluria. They built a whole village for the employees to live in! Fast forward to 1902, and the Siluria Cotton Mill Co. was officially incorporated. By 1954, the population of Siluria had reached around 600, and they decided to become an official town. In 1965 Buck Creek Industries, Inc. actually sold the village houses to the employees.
Alabaster was located right next to Siluria and has been making a name for itself since 1925. By 1953, Alabaster was incorporated as its own town, and Siluria voted to merge with Alabaster in 1971.
Alabaster is home to Shelby County's only hospital, the Shelby Baptist Medical Center. This hospital doesn't just serve Shelby County; it also caters to Bibb and Chilton counties too!
This city has so much to offer for both residents and businesses. It's in a fantastic location too — about 20 miles south of downtown Birmingham, and just a short six-mile drive south from Interstate 459.

You won't believe how amazing the parks are in Alabaster, and there are plenty to check out.
One of the absolute favorites is Veterans Park. It's a hit with the community. There are several youth baseball fields and you can often find a game going on. There is a disc golf course and a skatepark, too! And, if you're into walking or jogging, there are paved trails to check out. The ponds are a great touch, where you can enjoy feeding the fish for just a quarter! You can even rent pavilions for a small fee, making it an ideal spot for picnics or family get-togethers. Veterans Park is also pet-friendly, with its very own dog park, the Beneful Dream Dog Park. Your furry buddies will thank you!
Now, if you're a birdwatcher, you've got to visit Limestone Park. Tucked away in nature, this gem of a park is a haven for various bird species. This park is 100-acres of rare habitat and has one of the largest beaver marshes in the area. Over 500 species of plants, animals, birds, reptiles, and insects have been recorded in Limestone Park.
Buck Creek Park is a fantastic spot for families. It's got everything covered — handicap-accessible playground equipment for the little ones, workout areas for adults, and trails that welcome both dogs and bikes. Nature lovers will have a field day here, with the forest and creek adding to the park's natural charm. Plus, educational signs along the trails help kids learn about the wildlife they might encounter. There are also three softball fields so you are sure to be able to catch a game.
Things To Do
Friday nights light up in the fall with Thompson High School football games. 7A State Champions for four consecutive years, 2019-2022, the Warriors have become the team to try to beat. The team stepped up in the ranks back in 2018 when Tulia Tagovailoa, younger brother of the University of Alabama star and Miami Dolphins quarterback, joined the team. The Thompson Warriors have continued that success past the Tagoviloa dynasty, and fans come from all around to attend a home game. The season starts late August. Varsity tickets are $12 and can be purchased online using your smartphone.
You will want to mark your calendar for this awesome event in Alabaster — It's called CityFest! It's become one of the biggest annual gatherings in Shelby County. Back in the mid-1800s, the Chelsea area was originally known as Melrose. But in 1908, things changed when the railroad came through. Since there was already another place called Melrose on the route, they decided to give this area a new name – "Chelsea."
Fast forward to March 1, 1996, and Chelsea officially became a city. At that time, it had less than 1,000 residents, but they were determined to keep that close-knit community feel alive.
Since then, Chelsea has seen impressive growth. Every year, more than two hundred homes pop up, making it one of Alabama's fastest-growing cities. It's pretty amazing how it's flourished!

You won’t believe all the family attractions and activities the City of Chelsea has to offer.
First up is the Chelsea Community Center. A renovation in 2023 created two gyms for basketball and volleyball and racquetball courts. A membership is required to use the facilities, but not required to attend a program. The Chelsea Community Center hosts multiple youth sports camps. Families can look forward to the Summer Movies series, too.
The Melrose Park Splash Pad is the best place to let the kids cool off on hot summer days. Opening day is around the end of April and closing is around late September so there is plenty of time to enjoy this space.
For the outdoor or hunting enthusiasts, check out Archery Park. It is a designated and safe place to shoot bow and arrow. Targets are placed at different ranges so you can get some practice in before bow season. There is also an area to shoot from raised platforms and a tournament range. Archery Park also offers classes from late February to October.

From music to food trucks and an amazing fireworks show, it is a day full of fun. This festival happens on the last Saturday before the 4th of July every year.
On the third Saturday in December, the Chelsea Christmas Parade is held. This is an event that is anticipated and enjoyed by all. There are amateur floats, a few professional floats, and an “official” Santa closing out the parade.
Fire At The Foothills is a BBQ cook-off (and dessert cook-off, too) held in April. This spring fundraiser benefits the Kiwanis Club and Chelsea Fire & Rescue. There is live entertainment, a kids play area, and plenty of BBQ to sample!

You know it must be good if the locals love it. Cat-n-Bird Winery offers outdoor seating and live Music. It is a great place to grab a seat and a glass. The wine is delicious, too!
Station 31 Kitchen is another place that is loved. The menu consists of American food and the burgers are delicious. This casual eatery is perfect for a family meal or a lunch spot.
Good Ole Boys BBQ is a barbeque joint located in the heart of Chelsea, AL. Serving up the best pulled pork for miles, visitors might be surprised because it’s located inside the Marathon gas station. About 200 years ago, veterans of the War of 1812 settled in an area near the Cahaba River they called Cove. The peaceful valleys and streams offered the perfect place to set up a town. Another century and another name change later, Helena emerged as it is known today.
Throughout the 20th century, Helena experienced growth and decline, but by the end of the 1990s Helena was following the rest of the Birmingham metro area and expanding at a rapid rate. Over time, Helena has evolved into a city that offers the conveniences often associated with larger urban centers, all the while upholding its cherished family-oriented ambiance.
It’s amazing to think of how different Helena is today than it was for the first settlers, but what is also amazing is the growth of such a great north-central Alabama town!

The direct Italian translation of Montevallo is “on a mound in the valley.” With so much history, it’s no surprise that 73 homes and buildings have earned their place on the National Historic Register.

Considered one of the most unique parks and nature preserves in the south, Orr Park is a must-see for visitors. This forty-acre park has all the traditional amenities like athletic fields, pavilions, a gazebo, and restrooms. However, the real showstoppers are the magical tree carvings throughout Tinglewood. This park gives off an enchanted feeling as you could easily walk or bike by gnomes or a dragon straight out of a fairytale.
Tinglewood is credited to Mr. Tim Tingle, a coal miner who saw the hidden beauty in the park’s damaged cedar trees. In the early 1990’s he began to transform them into works of art. He continues this passion project so that visitors can have a blessed and magical time in the park. Don’t miss the Tinglewood Festival that happens each fall. Beyond the art, it's a serene spot for picnics, jogs, and catching those golden sunsets.

The town of Vincent, like most Shelby County towns, is almost as old as the State of Alabama. Founded by the Kidd family who was granted the land in the early 1800s, Vincent was eventually incorporated as a town in 1897.
Like many Shelby County towns, it saw great periods of growth early on. Fertile soil and picturesque landscapes made it the ideal place to settle, and the farming community was very large. Vincent has also been a pioneer in education since the first school was built there in 1854, and in 1993 Vincent became the first community in Alabama to introduce a year-round school calendar.
Today, Vincent’s growth has been steady with the rest of Shelby County, and when you find out about all of the exciting things happening in the community, it’s easy to see why!
