History And Patriotism At American Village With Melanie Poole

Melanie Poole

We had the privilege of sitting down with Melanie Poole, the Communications Officer at American Village in Shelby County, and boy, did we uncover a bunch of fascinating insights about this incredible place. Shelby County has so many adventures waiting to be discovered. Grab your virtual explorer’s hat and join us on this journey through history and patriotism!

The heart of American Village’s mission is to educate people, both young and old, about what it means to be an American citizen. As Melanie puts it, our nation sometimes suffers from “amnesia” when it comes to understanding its roots. American Village aims to change that by providing an immersive educational experience that transports you back to the founding generation of the United States.

Visitors have the unique opportunity to meet and interact with historical figures like Martha and George Washington, Abigail and John Adams, and Phyllis Wheatley. These experiences unfold on a sprawling 188-acre campus featuring over 20 historically inspired buildings. From replicas of George Washington’s Mount Vernon to the colonial courthouse at Williamsburg, it’s easy to step back in time and relive the American Revolution.

A Day in the Life at American Village

So, what can you expect on a visit to American Village? Well, it depends on the day, but there’s always something exciting happening. Upon arrival, you’ll check in at the gift shop, where they’ll provide you with a schedule of events for the day. You can choose to participate in one or all of these vignettes, or you can explore the vast 188-acre campus at your own pace.

For students, American Village offers unique programs like the Patriots program, where young learners in kindergarten through third grade get to experience Paul Revere’s ride and actively engage in history. This hands-on approach to education is a core part of American Village’s mission, and it’s not limited to younger students. They have programs catering to kindergarten through 12th grade, ensuring that everyone learns by doing.

A Year-Round Celebration of History

American Village doesn’t slow down throughout the year. They kick things off with a celebration of George Washington’s birthday in February and host the Festival of Tulips shortly after. Their school calendar runs through May, and then they gear up for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and a fabulous summer season filled with different themed events, from Colonial spy techniques to Paul Revere’s ride.

If you’re interested in hosting an event, American Village has you covered. With facilities ideal for birthday parties, family reunions, and business meetings, you can turn any occasion into a revolutionary experience.

The Semiquincentennial Celebration

Looking ahead, American Village has some exciting plans for the country’s 250th birthday celebration in 2026. Dubbed the semi-quincentennial, this historic milestone will be celebrated in style at American Village, which has been named the celebration capital for the occasion. Stay tuned for updates on special events leading up to this grand celebration.

Independence Hall Replica

Currently, American Village is constructing a full-scale replica of Independence Hall. The west wing, which opened in 2022, offers a multi-sensory experience, taking visitors through key moments in American history. The central part of Independence Hall is in the works, and the entire structure will be completed in time for the semiquincentennial.
