The county has everything from little lakes and ponds to huge reservoirs, so you can catch all kinds of fish like bass and catfish. There are tons of fishing holes in Shelby County, each with its own charm and different types of fish. If you’re planning to go fishing, here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:

• Make sure you have a valid fishing license.
• Be considerate of other fishermen and the natural surroundings.
• And most importantly, have a blast!

Most spots can be fished from the bank or a boat so pack your gear and pick a spot!

Oak Mountain State Park 

Oak Mountain State Park is one of the more popular fishing destinations in Pelham. You can choose from three lakes – two that are 85 acres and one that’s 60 acres – and all of them are stocked with a variety of fish like largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and crappie. Plus, all three lakes are open year-round for your fishing pleasure! Just a heads up – gasoline motors aren’t permitted, but you can use an electric trolling motor or even fish from a canoe. And if you have a private boat, you can launch it from any of the lakes.

In order to fish at the park, both Alabama residents and non-residents are required by state law to have fishing licenses. You can purchase your license at the Park Headquarters or beforehand, before entering the park.

Cahaba River

The Cahaba River is a great place to go fishing. There are many different types of fish in the river, including bass, catfish, and crappie. You can fish from the bank or by wading in the river. Wading is a great way to get up close and personal with the fish. The river is also a beautiful place to be, with lots of wildlife to see. 

Head to Cahaba River Park, located in Helena.You will find multiple fishing spots here, and this is where the Cahaba River meets Shades Creek. Aside from a dedicated park, there are a few turn-offs all along the river to stop and fish. Just be sure to have your Alabama fishing license with you no matter if you are a resident or not. 

Lay Lake

Lay Lake is a 12,000-acre reservoir that is located on the Shelby and Talladega County line. It is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and water skiing. Head to Wilsonville, Columbiana, and Shelby to grab a good spot on the lake. There are plenty of public boat launches, including Beeswax Landing at Beeswax Creek Park. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, catfish, and bream.

There are a number of different ways to fish Lay Lake. You can fish from the shore, from a boat, or by wading. If you are fishing from the shore, you will want to find a spot with some cover, such as trees or rocks. If you are fishing from a boat, you will want to troll or cast your bait around the lake. If you are wading, you will want to fish in the shallows where the fish are more likely to be found.

Lake Purdy 

Lake Purdy is located off Highway 280 near Overton and is a state water reservoir. This lake boasts some of the cleanest water in the region. They’re super serious about keeping it that way, so no outside boats allowed. If you’re keen to cast a line from a boat, you can reserve one of theirs online. Rental boats include Large Family Pontoons, Motor Boats, Rigged Out Bass Boats, Row Boats, Paddle Boards, and Kayaks.
