Biking Trails

Shelby County boasts numerous biking trails that cater to all skill levels and interests, from leisurely rides to challenging mountain biking adventures. Here are some of the top biking trails in the area that you shouldn’t miss:

Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park is a haven for mountain bikers, offering over 100 miles of trails (with more being added). Riders of all skill levels can enjoy a mix of single and double-track trails, with the main loop featuring about 1600 feet of combined climbing. The park’s reputation as a must-ride destination has spread across the country and around the world and for good reason!

The trails offer a variety of conditions, from smooth and fast to tight and twisty, with gnarly rooted sections, rock gardens, sand pits, and challenging climbs that lead to thrilling downhill sections. Although most of the trails are of intermediate skill level, advanced riders will still be challenged by sections such as “Blood Rock” and the BUMP trail.

If you’re new to mountain biking, don’t worry! The “easy” Lake Trail provides a relatively level and scenic ride around Double Oak Lake, making it perfect for beginners.

Double Oak Park

Shelby County’s newest park covers 900+ acres atop Double Oak Mountain and has quickly become a favorite for the mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts. Trails like Truckin’ and Fire on the Mountain will test even the most advanced cyclist with climbs. For those looking for a more leisure ride or hike, be sure to check out Morning Dew and Even Flow.

You don’t want to miss the view from Watchtower! This overlook allows you to see for miles and miles and the view is worth every inch of hike it takes to get there.

Cahaba River Park

With approximately 30 miles of multi-use trails, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore and challenge yourself at Cahaba River Park. Mountain bikers will be especially thrilled to know that 21 miles of professionally designed and constructed single-track trails await them.

From scenic ridgetop trails through the pines to trails that follow the Cahaba River or Shades Creek, there’s a trail to suit every preference. You can even take a spin on a trail that passes an old car that may have fallen out of the sky! For a more relaxed ride, there’s a loop around a large pond with an abundance of wildlife.

Take a break from your ride and enjoy a picnic at one of the three pavilions, two of which have connected restrooms. You’ll also find trail signage throughout the park to help you navigate. Plus, a caretaker resides onsite to provide security and maintenance, giving you peace of mind.

For those looking to access the river, three river access points with parking are available within this sector. And if you’re looking for a smooth ride, you’ll be happy to know that River Road was recently paved in 2021.

Preparing For A Bike Ride

Properly maintaining a bicycle is essential to ensure its longevity and reliability. Regular maintenance can prevent expensive repairs and keep the bike running smoothly. One of the most important things to do is to keep the chain clean and lubricated. A dirty and dry chain can cause excessive wear and tear on the bike’s components. Regularly checking the tire pressure and brakes is also important. Low tire pressure can cause unnecessary wear on the tires, while worn-out brake pads can lead to dangerous situations. Additionally, it is recommended to periodically check the bolts and nuts to ensure they are tightened properly.
