Roy Downs Memorial Library, formally Calera Public Library, has been serving Calera and Shelby County residents since 1958. The current facility is conveniently located close to the area’s schools, and within Oliver Park. The building was constructed with an eye towards patron comfort and experience.
The library has a collection of over 50,000 physical materials and enumerable digital materials. Calera Public Library serves a city population of over 15,000 including surrounding unincorporated areas. Circulating over 100,000 items this year has kept the library very busy! The library is governed by a five-member library board that is appointed by the mayor and city council. The current director, Alison Powers, has been serving the Calera area since 2005.
Internet access is available through the library and the immediate area. Programs for children of all ages are offered throughout the year with extra programming offered each summer. Adult programs, author visits, book clubs, and many other activities are available for adults.
