August First Friday-Presented by Calera Main Street

Friday, August 5, 2022

Calera Main Street wraps up their First Friday festival season in Downtown Calera, on August 5 with all things “Back to School”. The August event is brought to you by presenting sponsor Central State Bank featuring a youth talent show and the second annual Backpack Giveaway. This year the Calera High School Football Boosters will also hold their annual Meet the Eagles night in conjunction with the downtown festival.
Central State Bank Marketing Director, Jordan Bradley says, “We are teaming up with all of Calera to gather school supplies for the upcoming school year and we need your help to help fill over 100 backpacks to give out at First Friday on August 5th! School supplies can be dropped off at any of our Calera branches as well as Cowart Drugs and The Garage Kickboxing through the end of July!”
New this year is the Kids Talent Show. Children are encouraged to share their special talent, passion or skill, on stage during First Friday, August 5th. Performances may consist of singing, dancing, comedy, spoken word, magic, etc. The talent show is open to ages 5-18, with performances subject to approval. Signups are available online:

Also during the event, the community will get a glimpse of the 2022-2023 Calera Eagles football season as the Calera High and Middle School and Little League football players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, dance team and more will be part of the festival activities.
“Last year Calera’s churches and volunteers came together to stuff 100 backpacks and gave them away at the festival,” Jackie Batson, Calera Main Street Executive Director shared. “Dozens of children were excited to receive much needed supplies with no questions asked. Many of the backpacks as well as boxes full of needed classroom items were divided and taken directly to all four Calera schools to be used as needed.
“In addition to everything this year, kids and parents will have a chance to visit with all four Calera principals at the Meet the Principals tent,” Batson continued. “This will undoubtedly be the biggest August family event in Calera and will kick off the school year with something for everyone. We can’t wait to see the talent on display for this event, from music to athletics and various performances we’re sure to be entertained!”
Calera Main Street’s festival series has been welcoming crowds every first Friday since March this year in Downtown Calera in the Calera Courtyard (1120 17th Avenue) behind the shops in the historic downtown district. The event runs from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM and will feature dozens of local vendors, a kid’s zone with face painting, plus several food trucks to include: D's Soul Food, Gumbo to Geaux, Moe and Moore's BBQ, Summer Snow, The Smith Station, and others.
Parking can be found all around the downtown area from street parking on Hwy 25 and Hwy 31, to parking lots behind Fuzzy Buttz Pet Supply, Cowart Drugs, the Calera Police Department, Food Outlet and the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum, all within a short walk from the festival. Be sure to join in for all the fun in Downtown Calera.
