Helena
in Shelby County

One of the best qualities of Shelby County is how you can get the best of what a small town has to offer, while never being far away from the amenities of a bigger city. Helena is a prime example. A short drive down Interstate 65 from Birmingham will bring you into town, and you can experience first-hand what makes Helena such a special place. Learn about Helena and everything it has to offer with Discovery Shelby!

Helena

About 200 years ago, veterans of the War of 1812 settled in an area near the Cahaba River they called Cove. The peaceful valleys and streams offered the perfect place to set up a town. Another century and another name change later, Helena emerged as it is known today.

Throughout the 20th century, Helena experienced growth and decline, but by the end of the 1990s Helena was following the rest of the Birmingham metro area and expanding at a rapid rate. Over time, Helena has evolved into a city that offers the conveniences often associated with larger urban centers, all the while upholding its cherished family-oriented ambiance.

It’s amazing to think of how different Helena is today than it was for the first settlers, but what is also amazing is the growth of such a great north-central Alabama town!
